The Virunga volcanoes are part of the Albertine Rift Mountains, the western branch of the East African Rift. Nyiragongo and the neighbouring Nyamuragira in the north are active and the youngest volcanoes of the Virunga mountains. The remaining six remaining volcanos in the border region to Rwanda and Uganda are extinct: Karisimbi, Mikeno, Muhabura, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, and Gahinga.
