Nyiragongo is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo belonging to the Virunga volcano chain. The Virunga volcanoes are part of the Albertine Rift Mountains, i.e. the western branch of the East African Rift. The last eruption of Nyiragongo occurred in 2002 and buried streets in Goma under meter high lava. 170 people died, and 350'000 people fled to neighbouring Rwanda.
