Alizwa Mashalaba, 18, lives in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town, South Africa. Kayelitsha is the largest township settlement in South Africa. The name is Xhosa for New Home. Established in 1985 on the Cape Flats in the City of Cape Town, large numbers of people were forcefully relocated here during the Apartheid regime. Living conditions in the township have improved since then, but the majority of residents still has to walk for water access and many do not have electricity. Kayelitsha has the highest murder and violent crime rate in the country.
